Five foreign students studying in Yogyakarta were given an opportunity to volunteer at a cultural event in the subdistrict Cepogo (district Boyolali, Central Java). I gladly joined to witness this event that is upholding generations of local tradition and culture.
We were picked up by villagers from Dangean (a village in the subdistrict Cepogo) the evening before (13 April 2019) and we stayed in a homestay for one night. The event started early the next day (14 April 2019). After the ceremony, we did a little sightseeing before we had to go back to the city. We were dropped off by the villagers as well.
The ceremony we attended is called 'Sadranan' and is a local (Central Java) tradition to commemorate the ancestors/those who have passed by cleaning their tombstones (we didn't attend this) and pray to God for their safety and for their soul to be at peace. There is also a communal 'Kenduren' where the family/community gathers together, pray, and share food with each other. We attended the Kenduren.*
Thank you for your hospitality, Dangean and Cepogo! Terima kasih, Dangean! Matur nuwun.
